Common SEO Definitions

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most essential parts to the success of any business when setting online marketing goals. But how do we make sense of it all? There are literally hundreds of different definitions when it comes to learning about SEO. Check out the rest of this article to learn some of the most common SEO Definitions.

301 Redirect – This is a piece of code that web developers use when directing an old webpage to a brand new one. The whole point of doing this is so you do not lose the value or organic rank that the original page gave your site.

Alt Tag – This is a piece of code that used by search engines to help it determine what the image is. It also provides information if the image cannot be displayed.

Backlink – Is a link from one site to another, or in simpler terms, when site ‘A’ recommends site ‘B’ and lists it on their site. This is a common factor when the search engines determine how well a website will rank.

Black Hat SEO – Just as it sounds, this is the use of techniques that are generally frowned upon by the major search engines. In most cases, a site that is found using these techniques will be penalized or in some cases completely removed from the search results.

Blog – A blog is used by many sites on the web and it is way to express the values, news or information related to your particular industry, business or hobby.

Conversion – This is one of the most important metrics one should consider when building a website. Conversions are often measured by making a sale, acquiring a lead, or visiting certain pages on a site.

CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) – This is the amount of money you spend as a business when making a sale or generating a lead. This is often tracked through ad spend but can also be measured in other ways and is often recorded after a specific event that occurs.

CPC (Cost Per Click) – This is the amount of money that it costs per click to your website. It is most commonly measured when you do online advertising.

CTR (Click Through Rate) – This is the used to determine the success of an advertising campaign and is used by many to determine how well a specific keyword is ranking. A CTR is calculated by dividing the number of people that clicked by the number of times the ad or keyword was

Dynamic Website – This is a website that has content which is viewable on any device such as a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smart phone and it does not take away from the user experience.

Keywords – These are essential words that search engines use to help determine what a particular website is about. Keywords, when used correctly, are an excellent way to help a website rank.

Landing Page – This is a webpage that is created specifically to sell a product or acquire a lead. Most landing pages have a form for users to fill out. Landing pages are also pages on which a user arrives when searching the web. Any page on a website can be a landing page.

Meta Information – This information is mostly for search engines and they are used to help them determine, in a concise way, what a particular page is about. The most common meta data is a description or page title.
